January 2, 2008 - Trim and Rudder Bottom Tip |
||||||
After all the effort of wiring the trim system up, it was finally time to power it up and see if the thing worked. I crimped D-Sub connector pins to the infamously thin servo wires and connected them to the five wires that run the length of the plane. | ||||||
I moved the hat-switch on the pilot's
stick, and sure enough, the elevator trim servo moved! The
trim indicator, just to the left of the airspeed indicator, worked as
well. As I moved the trim up, the light cycled up, and vice
versa.
Cool.

I pondered the issue of the rudder
bottom tip and the strobe/tail light wires for some time. The goal
is to be able to remove the rudder from the airframe without having to cut
the wires. There were a number of different solutions on the forums
but in the end I decided to make the fiberglass tip removable by putting
in nutplates. There were three places on each side I couldn't
install nutplates so I'll just pop-rivet them and drill them out if I have
to.
Here, I'm installing the
nutplates.
