October 22, 2006 - Fwd Upper Fuse

I spent all yesterday (Saturday) flying so today I decided to devote to building.

I had previously fashioned the C-617, C-618, and C-619 bushing blocks and spacers.  I drilled the holes per the drawings.

Next I started match-drilling the bushing blocks using the F-644 rib as a template.

Even though the drawing called for it, I shouldn't have pre-drilled the bushing block, because the rib has a starter hole.

Lesson learned:  Don't follow the drawings and pre-drill the bushing blocks.  Instead back drill them through the rib.
Once you've drilled the holes in the thick bushing block, you can use it as a template to drill holes in the thin bushing block.

Then you insert the C-619 spacer using the single previously drilled hole, then match-drill the second hole.

With all three bushing blocks and spacers drilled, it's time to match-drill the F-745 rib.

You push the bolts in until they butt up agains the F-745 rib.
I clecoed on the top skin so that the F-745 rib was in its proper place.  With the skin on, I was able to drill one of the holes.  My drill was too big to get to the others.
So I put a bolt in the hole I was able to drill, clamped the ribs and spacers together, and took them out of the fuse for drilling the remaining two holes.  This worked fine.  And that takes care of the canopy release area for now.
it was a warm day and therefore good for priming.  When I gathered all the parts that needed priming, I couldn't believe how many there were.  I had previously scuffed them up with scotch-brite.  First I washed the parts in the sink.  Then I wiped them down with acetone to get the Sharpie markings off.
Then it was to the garage for priming with Mar-Hyde.
This batch is done.  Some of the parts I left the alcad-inside unprimed.
