August 21, 2005 - Fuselage Bulkheads

Maximum effort this Sunday.  I put in about eight hours.  My goal was to finish priming all the bulkhead components and I did that.

First I worked on the last bulkhead, the F-712.  Like the F-711, I had to round the corners of the flange teeth.  Then I clecoed the two bulkheads together and match-drilled them.  Next I bent the flanges to where I thought they should be, then fluted.  After that, I deburred the holes, edge-smoothed the edges, removed the labels, etc. etc.

I went back through each bulkhead and checked to see I had all the holes drilled.  I found that I needed to drill a few more holes on some, like this static port hole.  I smoothed some rough edges.  Then I scuffed up all the pieces a little with the scotch-brite so that the primer would adhere better.  It took me a few hours to do all of that.
I took all the parts upstairs and washed them in the sink.  Here they are after their bath.  My next step was to wipe them down with acetone as required to remove Sharpie markings.
Priming with Mar-Hyde.  I have no regrets about using the rattle-can.  What little time I spend on priming is about all I want to spend on it.  Our 1970 Citabria has aluminum ribs in the wings.  They are not primed with anything, not even rattle can.  No problems.
Priming complete.  Next step: rivet the bulkheads together!
