July 23, 2006 - Delaware Flight

The weekend weather had been crummy -- overcast and rainy -- including Sunday morning.  But it was supposed to burn off and I suspected it might be some good flying weather.  Boy was I right!

I took off around 12:30.  The skies were clear around Baltimore and visibility was great!  Below is an island that I always pass heading east.  In the summer, there are always a lot of boats in the area in the center of the photo.  The reason, I found out from a boating wizard at work, is because the bottom is sandy, which is unusual in the bay.  The sandy bottom makes for great swimming!

Approaching the eastern shore, you can see how good the visibility was.  Visibility this good is just unheard of in Maryland in July.  There is also broken cumulous ahead around 3,500 feet, unusually low.
It had rained hard the day before, so everything was bright green.  Combined with the white cumulous clouds, it was a very pretty day to fly.
Luscious cumulous clouds this low almost never happens in Maryland.

High overhead Massey Airfield.  On the way back I stopped in and talked to a few folks covering a Stearman.
I continued east to Smyrna Airport in Delaware and shot a few landings.
Leaving Smyrna, I continued a little further on to the Delaware Bay coast, then turned north.  The area ahead was mostly swampland but very scenic.
My kind of country -- nothing man-made.
I went back to Massey, stopped there for a bit, then headed home.  Near Chestertown, I flew near this private grass strip and saw a blue and yellow Stearman taking off.  It was just a great day to be flying!
The Stearman and I circled a couple of times and then I had to break it off and head back to Essex.
In terms of just fun flying, this was one of the best flights I've ever had.
