September 21-23, 2007 - Transit To Dayton, Ohio

Bruce and I took off work on Friday, jumped into the Citabria at dawn, and headed West.  Destination:  Dayton, Ohio for a visit to the U.S. Air Force Museum and also check out the bi-annual World War I rendezvous.  The plan was to fly out Friday morning and come back Sunday.  Surpriseling, the forecast looked great for all three days.

There was some ground fog at first.  Not a problem and very scenic.

Sugarload Mountain poking through the fog.

We stopped at Winchester Airport to rendezvous with John in his red Citabria.  Just like the Gastons flight last year.  John's Citabria is in the ramp left hand corner by the self service fuel pump.

Heading west over the Appalachian mountains.

Checking out the scenary.

The mountains were covered with trees.  They ought to be something to see in about a month when the colors turn.

There was still some fog in the south.

We stopped at Fairman Field in Fairmont, West Virginia to gas up and get breakfast at a 50s-60s Diner a short walk away.

Bruce and the trusty Citabria.

The long Mountain Ridges gave way to endless, broken tree-covered hills.  Not a lot of places to land in this terrain.

The mighty Ohio River.

A private strip alongside the Ohio.

John must have seen something interesting down low.

Bruce and I stopped at a small airport to swap seats while John flew down the runway.

Eventually we left the hill country and entered the Ohio flat-lands.

Getting close to Dayton.

We ended the cross-country at Greene County airport where we had a rental car waiting.  Nice airport and FBO.  Very friendly staff. I think they get a lot of out-of-towners visiting the USAF Museum.
