January 19, 2007 - Canopy Trimming

My $10 die grinder off switch stopped working so it was back to Harbor Freight.  I decided to go with an angle grinder since others have said it is easier to make the Big Cut with it.  I bought an angle grinder but experimentation revealed that it didn't cut well at all.  The wheel was really wobbling on me.  Forget that.  Someone on the VAF forum had used a 2" sanding disk on the angle grinder and had good luck with it smoothing the edges.  I tried that and it really did do a nice job so that's what I'll use it for.  Bruce lent me his die grinder -- which is proven -- and I will use it for cutting with the wheel Van's provides in the finish kit.
With Bruce's die grinder, I was ready to continue the canopy trimming.  First I cut off the rear edge.  The die grinder worked great.
Then I cut off the front part, all the way up to the line where it goes from horizontal to vertical.
The canopy sits on the fuse for the first time.
I was pleasantly surprised when it fit across the canopy skin with almost no between canopy and skin.
The gap between the canopy and the roll bar looked to be around 1".  Sweet!  That's close enough so that no further trimming is required prior to the big cut.  There is plenty of trimming still required, only after the big cut.
