September 15-24, 2022 - Utah Flight and Triple Tree Fly-In |
||||||
Anyone who follows my aviation web log knows my favorite place to fly is south-eastern Utah. I've been there three times; the most recent last summer. I wanted to share the experience so this September I invited a few RV-flying friends to join me. I ended up with three others: Chuck (RV-7A), Mark (RV-8) and Bruce aka Mugsy (RV-8). We would fly direct to the town of Green River, Wyoming and then spend the next five or so day flying around south-eastern Utah, then transiting home. Instead of coming back to Maryland, I would break off to attend the Triple Tree Aerodrome annual fly-in event in South Carolina. |

The trip generally went as planned. Weather was a little more of a factor than on my previous long cross-country trips but it was mostly excellent. We usually did two sightseeing flights a day. The first one was always just after daybreak, to take advantage of the smooth air and good light. We'd land and take a break, then do another two hour sightseeing flight. We were usually done flying by early afternoon. ADS-B was a big help; we could each see where the others were beyond visual range. I was sort of like the aerial tour guide. My three friends had never flown over anything like southern Utah before and I think it blew them away. Some of the places we flew were new to me as well. My friends also liked camping at Escalante Airport and eating at such places as Bryce Canyon, Marble Canyon and Monument Valley. So click on the following links and come fly with us!
Mugsy put together a great video of the flight: Link.
