England - Sep18 - Weymouth |

After visiting Portsmouth, we drove west to Weymouth which is a seaside town in Dorset, southern England. Originally the plan had included a stop at the Tank Museum in Bovington, so I had tried to find a place to stay close by Bovington. I don't know what I was thinking because Weymouth isn't that close to Bovington! But it turned out to be kind of a neat place; I'm glad we saw it. Since we didn't have time for the Tank Museum -- Lynnette was really upset about that! -- Weymouth was closer to where we wanted to go the next day anyways. In Weymouth, we stayed at the Somerset House Hotel which I would describe as a corner pub restaurant with a few very nice, new, modern rooms above it. It's a short walk to the beach. |

We were walking along the boardwalk when we came across this memorial. And then I remembered. In World War II, they were conducting a training exercise at Weymouth Bay in preparation for the D-Day invasion. Some German E-boats were able to get in and sink one of the troopships with great loss of life. I was impressed that they had a memorial to it. | ||||||
I can see why they practiced the invasion here; this beach is very similar to the Normandy beaches.
