England - Sep18 - Stratford on Avon - Shakespeare

We left Bath and headed up to Stratford-upon-Avon.  The plan had to visit some of the Cotswolds Hills, a fairy-tale region dotted with enchanting villages -- on the way but we ended up getting lost on the back roads and saw none of it.

We did make it to Stratford in time to see the sights there.  Stratford-upon-Avon is Shakespeare's home town.   Here Lynnette stands in front of the house he was born and grew up in.  His father was a glove maker.  Apparently you could make a good living making gloves because he was able to afford this house, which was pretty good for its day.

We went through a small museum first, then went through the house.  They did not allow photography in the house for some reason.  Some of the rooms had docents dressed in period costumes.

I wonder if this tree was around at the time of the Great Bard?

Of course, Shakespeare did pretty well, and was able to afford his own house in Stratford.   Nothing remains of the house, but you can visit the house next door.  We didn't do it though.

We walked over to the Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was buried.

Behind the church was the River Avon -- but not the same river as the one by Bath.

We walked along the river back towards the main town area.  It was very peaceful and scenic.

Including white swans!

Along the river walk was the Royal Shakespeare Company's facility.  They have world-class actors that do the Shakespeare plays.  I had tried to get some tickets but tonight was Hamlet and it was sold out.

I don't know why; I've never really been able to read or appreciate Shakespeare's works.  I'm not taking anything away from the great man; it's just me.  I do admire what he was able to do back in the 16th century.  I enjoyed seeing the Globe Theatre replica in London.

We left Stratford and had a short drive north to Royal Lemington Spa, just east of Warwick, where our B&B was.

Along the way we passed a small airport with this derelict 747 sitting there.

Our B&B at Royal Lemington Spa.  We had a nice dinner at a little French restaurant just down the street.
