France June 2016 - The River Seine

We went on a one-hour boat cruise on the Seine River.  I think we got on at the Pont Neuf bridge.  There are lots of boat cruise operators -- we just walked up and got on.  It was fun.   A must-do when visiting Paris for the first time.

Happy cruisers!

The boats are long, narrow and short -- so they can fit under the low Seine River bridges.

The impressive Assemblée Nationale building.   The buildings on this south stretch of the Seine are amazing.  You can't capture it with pictures -- too many.   On the cruise boat, there is a tour guide who tells you what's what in both French and English.  It's interesting, but who can remember it all?

Even the bridges are beautiful in Paris.  This is the Pont Alexandre III.    (If you haven't guessed it by now, Pont means Bridge in English)

What's this?  Did we just time warp to New York City?   No, it's a smaller Statue of Liberty in the middle of the Seine at the Pont de Grenelle.  It's one-fourth the height of the original, and was given by the American community to Paris.

One of the few pictures I took back in 1973 on a family visit to Paris.  Look familiar?

Our first close-up look at the Eiffel Tower.  Notice the soccer ball hanging in the middle of the lower structure.

There was a big soccer tournament in Paris this week.  We saw groups of fans, decked out in the jersies of their country, all over the city -- mostly in bars -- drinking and singing and having a great time.

We would be up there in a few days.

The soccer ball.

It's big but I got it all in one shot.

The river was high, but this studious reader persevered.

Cruising through Paris.  Not a bad way to spend an hour.

Parisians relaxing on the roof of their houseboat.

You can see how high the water is in this picture.
