France June 2016 - American Cemetery, Normandy |
Our next step was the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial located on a bluff above Omaha Beach. From the parking lot, we entered the visitors center, which was very interesting, and then exited into the cemetery. |
Walking along a path parallel to the beach.
Our first look at the beach. A path leads down to it.
A better look at Omaha Beach. It looks so peaceful now.
9,387 American soldiers are buried here.
These overseas American cemeteries are immaculately maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission. They do a great job. I still remember how impressed I was by the American Cemetery in Tunis I visited back in the early 90's while on a Mediterrianean deployment.
Each headstone has the name, home state, and date of death inscribed on it. The cemetery is very peaceful and solemn. |
The memorial has a statue at the center representing the spirit of American youth.
Maps of the D-Day battle and Normandy campaign are on the Memorial's inner circle.
The Chapel at the center of the cemetery.
